There are highly specialized recovery programs that are able to recover data even after more than 100 overwrites. If your data security level falls into a category needing protection from this type of recovery DMN recommends that the media be physically destroyed and the pieces disposed of into at least 2 different landfills. However, physical destruction of hard disks is difficult and may cause injuries. A sledge hammer is not the answer. Drilling several holes in a hard drive is not acceptable. Dismantling the drive and burning the parts that are flamable and disposing of the parts at different locations is recomended. If you just need to erase the data to DOD standards then these programs are free.
