Mobile phones 'more dangerous than smoking'
Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation. Professor Khurana – a top neurosurgeon who has received 14 awards over the past 16 years, has published more than three dozen scientific papers – reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile phones. He has put the results on a brain surgery website, and a paper based on the research is currently being peer-reviewed for publication in a scientific journal. He admits that mobiles can save lives in emergencies, but concludes that "there is a significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumours". He believes this will be "definitively proven" in the next decade. Noting that malignant brain tumours represent "a life-ending diagnosis", he adds: "We are currently experiencing a reactively unchecked and dangerous situation." He fears that "unless the industry and governments take immediate and decisive steps", the incidence of malignant brain tumours and associated death rate will be observed to rise globally within a decade from now, by which time it may be far too late to intervene medically.

Doctors expect thousands if not tens of thousands of post Iraq War suicides. In a recent column, I documented some 150,000 to 200,000 Vietnam American soldier suicides after active duty. Yet, Bush again made his statements at the news conference like he repeats year after year. “We will not let their deaths be in vain,” Bush said in his news conference. Every year, more deaths, more killing, more money wasted and more lives destroyed. Johnson and Nixon said exactly the same words in different phrases. “Peace with honor,” Nixon said. “I will not send our boys to fight on foreign soil 10,000 miles away,” Johnson said. Bush’s idea of making those 4,000 deaths valid is to go out and kill another 4,000 of our young people and wound another 30,000! Brilliant logic Mr. Bush!

Katrina Victims May Have to Repay Money
Imagine that your home was reduced to mold and wood framing by Hurricane Katrina. Desperate for money to rebuild, you engage in a frustrating bureaucratic process, and after months of living in a government-provided trailer tainted with formaldehyde you finally win a federal grant. Then a collector calls with the staggering news that you have to pay back thousands of dollars. Thousands of Katrina victims may be in that situation. A private contractor under investigation for the compensation it received to run the Road Home grant program for Katrina victims says that in the rush to deliver aid to homeowners in need some people got too much. Now it wants to hire a separate company to collect millions in grant overpayments. The contractor, ICF International of Fairfax, Va., revealed the extent of the overpayments when it issued a March 11 request for bids from companies willing to handle "approximately 1,000 to 5,000 cases that will necessitate collection effort." The bid invitation said: "The average amount to be collected is estimated to be approximately $35,000, but in some cases may be as high as $100,000 to $150,000." The biggest grant amount allowed by the Road Home program is $150,000, so ICF believes it paid some recipients the maximum when they should not have received a penny. If ICF's highest estimate of 5,000 collection cases — overpaid by an average of $35,000 — proves to be true, that means applicants will have to pay back a total of $175 million.

Actually, though, Scaife's mind has been changing about the Clintons for some time, as WND previously reported. Treasury Secretary Paulson, Brit Exchequer Chancellor Darling to “Monitor” Financial System
London - Britain and the United States plan a joint Anglo-US financial working group to improve monitoring of the international financial system, the Financial Times said on Monday. According to the paper, British Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling and US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson agreed last week to set up the group, which is to prepare proposals for better monitoring and regulation of the international financial markets. Darling is expected to present the finalized plans, including membership and terms of reference, at a meeting of the G7 finance ministers on April 11 in Washington. US President George Bush and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will discuss further steps for stricter monitoring of international financial transactions during this week’s Nato summit in Bucharest, the paper said, quoting British government sources. The main goal was a joint approach to the international financial crisis that has hit both countries hard. The joint working group’s tasks will be to look into the role of agencies for evaluating credit and investment risks and increase transparency in the evaluation of complex financial products, the paper said.

The dollar is likely to remain under pressure for the next few months at least, but its weakness is not inconsistent with the Bush administration's strong dollar policy, former U.S. Treasury undersecretary Tim Adams said on Monday. "A strong dollar policy is a pledge by the United States not to use the dollar as a tool to gain competitive advantage in global markets. So it's not inconsistent," Adams, who was the Treasury's top international official until last summer, told a conference in Hong Kong. The dollar has plumbed record lows against the euro as the U.S. credit crunch has worsened. This has prompted some commentators, including Mohamed El-Erian, co-chief executive officer of Pimco, the world's biggest bond fund, to call for concerted central bank intervention to stabilize the currency and steady global markets. Steve Hanke, an economics professor at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, agreed that international action, as well as expansionary fiscal policy in Japan and Europe, was needed to help put a floor under the dollar.

MSNBC ran a story on Arctic sea ice on March 18 from the Associated Press that included comments from professionals that seem positively unhinged from reality. While admitting that Arctic sea ice made a partial recovery this winter, federal scientists are still favoring Chicken Little’s "the sky is falling, the sky is falling," alarm to foist on the general public. Walt Meier of the National Snow and Ice Data Center told reporters: "Thickness is an indicator of long-term health of sea ice, and that’s not looking good at the moment. What’s going on underneath the surface is really the key thing." He added, "It may look OK but if you could see behind you’d see … it’s just empty. And what we’re seeing with the ice cover is it’s becoming more and more empty underneath the ice cover." NASA satellite images show Arctic ice cover to be well on it’s way back to previous levels. But NASA ice scientist Josefino Comiso says more than 70 percent of that sea ice is new, and thin and salty. The more important ice is a thicker perennial sea ice that normally lasts through the summer.

House price slump in US dashes hope of end to credit crisis
Declines in US house prices are continuing to accelerate, according to surveys that signal there will be no quick end to the credit crisis. The price of the average home was 11 per cent lower than a year ago, the S&P Case-Shiller index showed yesterday, as repossessed homes flood the market – and economists predict that the price adjustment may belittle more than half over. The Case-Shiller index has become one of the most widely followed measures of the US economy because American homes are the collateral that supports hundreds of billions of dollars of mortgage-backed securities and other credit derivatives. The latest figures cover house prices in 20 metropolitan areas in January, and show that price declines have spread far beyond the once-hot speculative property markets in Florida and the South-west and crumbling industrial towns. Now, Charlotte, North Carolina, is the sole region showing year-on-year gains. The year-on-year decline of 10.7 per cent in the average house price is worse than anything seen in the last downturn in the early Nineties. Prices fell 2.4 per cent in just one month.

US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said Tuesday that America's Social Security program for the retired is "financially unsustainable" and needs an urgent overhaul. Paulson, speaking after a government panel had completed its annual assessment of the Social Security and Medicare benefits programs, said waves of retiring Americans threaten to soon deplete available funds stockpiled in the two programs. "As the baby boom generation moves into retirement, these programs face progressively larger financial challenges," Paulson said. The Treasury secretary said a growing number of retirees and the programs' rising costs could harm America's future prosperity if Social Security and Medicare are not overhauled and bolstered.

Wall Street May Face $460 Bln in Losses, Goldman Says
Wall Street banks, brokerages and hedge funds may report $460 billion in credit losses from the collapse of the subprime mortgage market, or almost four times the amount already disclosed, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Profits will continue to wane, other analysts said. "There is light at the end of the tunnel, but it is still rather dim,'' Goldman analysts including New York-based Andrew Tilton said in a note to investors today. They estimated that residential mortgage losses will account for half the total, and commercial mortgages as much as 20 percent. Earnings and share prices at U.S. financial institutions tumbled in the past year as fallout from the mortgage crisis spread to other markets. Demand for mortgage-backed securities evaporated, leading to the collapse of Bear Stearns Cos., once that market's largest underwriter, and a Federal Reserve-led bailout by JPMorgan Chase & Co. earlier this month. Goldman's own share-price estimate was cut 3.7 percent to $210 at Fox-Pitt Kelton Cochran Caronia Waller. The research firm also reduced its profit estimates for the world's biggest securities firm for the rest of this year and all of 2009.

US deploys nuclear sub to Persian Gulf’
An American nuclear submarine has crossed the Suez Canal to join the US fleet stationed in the Persian Gulf, Egyptian sources say. Egyptian officials reported that the nuclear submarine crossed the canal along with a destroyer on Friday and Egyptian forces were put on high alert when the navy convoy was passing through the canal. An American destroyer recently left the Persian Gulf, heading towards the Mediterranean Sea; earlier on Thursday, a US Navy rescue ship crossed the canal to enter the Red Sea. The deployment comes as recent reports allege that US Vice President Dick Cheney is seeking to rally the support of Middle Eastern states for launching an attack on Iran. This is while US officials deny that Cheney’s Mideast tour is linked to a possible military attack on Iran. According to the latest reports, in recent months a major part of the US Navy has been deployed in and around the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, Iran on Sunday rejected French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s comments on the necessity to build a strong deterrent against new security threats posed by nuclear-armed Islamic states, a news agency reported. Speaking on Friday at the launch of the fourth of France’s latest generation of nuclear-armed submarines, Sarkozy said Iran was “increasing the range of its missiles while serious suspicions weigh on its nuclear programme”.

Friday, Dick Cheney was in Saudi Arabia for high-level meetings with the Saudi king and his ministers. On Saturday, it was revealed that the Saudi Shura Council, the elite group that implements the decisions of the autocratic inner circle, is preparing "national plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the kingdom following experts' warnings of possible attacks on Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactors," one of the kingdom's leading newspapers, Okaz, reports. The German-based dpa news service relayed the paper's story. Simple prudence, or ominous timing? We noted here last week that an American attack on Iran was far more likely, and more imminent, than most people suspect. We pointed to the mountain of evidence for this case gathered by scholar William R. Polk, one of the top aides to John Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and to other indicators of impending war. The story by Okaz, which would not have appeared in the tightly controlled dictatorship without approval from the top, is yet another, very weighty piece of evidence laid in the scales toward a new, horrendous conflict. We don't know what the Saudis told Cheney in private, or even more to the point, what he told them. But the release of this story now, just after his departure, would seem to be a clear indication that the Saudis have good reason to fear a looming attack on Iran's nuclear sites and are actively preparing for it. And they certainly should be bracing themselves. A notice of appeal has been filed on behalf of four Christians who were fined for praying in a public park in Elmira, N.Y., according to officials with the Alliance Defense Fund, a legal alliance that defends the right to hear and speak the truth. "Christians shouldn't be punished for expressing their religious beliefs," said Joel Oster, a senior legal counsel for the ADF. "They have the same First Amendment rights as anyone else in America." The case stems from a visit by seven Christians to a homosexual festival in a public park in Elmira last year. They were convicted of "disorderly conduct" even though the police officer who arrested them testified their actions were peaceful. Charges against three of the defendants were dropped, but Elmira City Judge Thomas Ramich concluded Julian and Gloria Raven, Maurice Kienenberger and Walter Quick were guilty of disorderly conduct and fined them $100 apiece, plus court costs. A local newspaper reported the judge determined Raven was reckless for going to the park.

Several banking research services and seasoned economists estimate that the final damage will exceed 1,000 billion dollars. How did the banks manage to build such an irrational lending system? Eager for profit, mortgage companies made loans to a sector of the population that was already heavily indebted. The conditions attached to these mortgages--highly profitable for the lender--amounted to daylight robbery for the borrower: the interest rate was fixed and reasonable for the first two years but thereafter rose sharply. Lenders assured borrowers that the property they were buying would quickly appreciate thanks to the boom in the real estate sector. The problem was that the real estate bubble burst in 2007 and house prices started to go steadily down. The number of defaults on payment soared and mortgage brokers had trouble repaying their own loans. To protect themselves, the big banks either refused extra credit to the mortgage lenders or agreed to new loans at far higher interest rates. But the spiral did not stop there, since the big banks had bought up a large number of the original loans as off-balance sheet operations by creating specific companies called Structured Investment Vehicles (SIV), which finance the purchase of high yield mortgages converted into bonds (CDOs, or Collateralised Debt Obligations).

Stunned Bear Stearns shareholders who saw investments virtually wiped out overnight when a takeover deal with JPMorgan Chase was unveiled are demanding to know how it was put together in the first place. OK, then a simple corollary presents itself: Raising revenue through tolls is self-destructive and quite stupid. Thus, I have a challenge for toll-advocating politicians. So many of you, such as NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NY Governor Eliot Spitzer and Governor Corzine, will happily pontificate about the perils of global warming, about how citizens have to sacrifice to reduce their carbon footprint (I know where I'd like to put a carbon footprint). I want you to put your money - and, really, it's our money - where your mouth is. Eliminating tolls will greatly mitigate all the problems you pay lip service to, while making the people's lives easier. C'mon, you talk the talk about the importance of sacrificing for the good of Mother Earth and posterity.

A survey of 180 in-house counsel working in five European countries identified the US as the jurisdiction they were keenest to avoid, with 29 per cent naming it the country they were most concerned about facing a major dispute in. The US attracted almost twice as many votes as Russia and China. Despite fears of political interference and corruption in their legal processes, both were named by just 16 per cent of in-house counsel as their most feared jurisdiction. The survey, commissioned by Lovells, the international law firm, noted that “while in-house lawyers are relatively comfortable with managing disputes in their own countries, there is great concern regarding the unknowns in different markets”. It said the US system, although less corrupt than most, is "filled with traps in which the inexperienced or uninformed may easily become caught”. Venezuela's state-run oil firm is starting to demand payment in euros — a measure aimed at protecting revenues from a weakening U.S. dollar, Venezuela's oil minister said Tuesday. Rafael Ramirez said the initiative by Petroleos de Venezuela SA, or PDVSA, to charge euros rather than U.S. dollars was "advancing," but not yet completed. "The issue of euros in new contracts is going to be progressive," Ramirez told a news conference. "Only the first steps have been taken. A specific policy has not been established." He said some new contracts require payment in euros. PDVSA decided to demand payment in euros as a means of protecting the company from the falling value of the dollar.

The meeting of the so-called “two plus two” group of the US and Russian foreign and defence ministers seemed to offer no prospect of an early thaw in relations between the two countries, weeks before Russia is set to inaugurate Dmitry Medvedev as its president. Relations between the two countries have in the past year hit their lowest point since the Soviet collapse, as Vladimir Putin, the outgoing president, has used tough rhetoric to criticise what he calls US attempts to create a “unipolar” world. "This is a great victory," owner Joey Vento told WND today after the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations ruled his sign could stay in the window of Gino's Steaks South Philadelphia landmark store. The controversy began in October 2005 when Vento put up a small bumper-sticker size sign. On June 12, 2006, the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations launched on its own initiative a discrimination case against Vento. It alleged the sign violated the city's Fair Practice Ordinance by discouraging the business of non-English speaking people, including, most importantly, Hispanic-speaking immigrants.

The Bush Administration's Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel is refusing to turn over a document providing its analysis of Bush's justification for executive orders. Responding to a Freedom of Information Act request from the Federation of American Scientists, the office said the document was "classified." Steven Aftergood, who writes the Secrecy News blog for the Federation, requested the legal opinion after a Democratic senator referenced it on the Senate floor. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), the freshman senator who ousted Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) in 2006, said he'd reviewed three documents that outlined Justice Department opinions. "For years, under the Bush administration, the Office of Legal Counsel within the Department of Justice has issued highly classified, secret legal opinions related to surveillance," Whitehouse said in a Dec. 7, 2007 floor statement. "This is an administration that hates answering to an American court, that wants to grade its own exams, and OLC is the inside place the administration goes to get legal support for its spying program."

'Perfect storm' hits California parents
California parents who want more for their children than the institutionalized indoctrination of public schools are being boxed in more and more, according to an international pro-family organization whose leaders are expressing horror over a recent court ruling banning homeschooling in the state. WND broke the story about the ruling from a Los Angeles appeals court that ordered a homeschooling family to enroll their children in a public school or "qualified" private school, specifically disallowing the program they already were in. Since then, several petitions have been assembled to protest the decision, a multitude of homeschooling advocates have announced plans to seek to overturn it, and even Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state Supt. of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell have acknowledged parents' rights in determining their children's education should be protected. Now comes the concern from The World Congress of Families. "There's something like a perfect storm relative to educational freedom in California," said Congress founder Allan Carlson. "You've got the governor and state legislature (in 2007) in a sense signing off on a fairly radical sex gender education program. And two years ago there was a court decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that basically said once you put your children in a public school parents abdicate control.

The most acute effects have been seen in Egypt, where thousands of people have resorted to violence due to shortages of basic food commodities and rising food prices. At least 10 people have died over the past two weeks, in riots that erupted at government subsidised bakeries. The unavailability of basic food products such as bread, rice, sugar and cooking oil, coupled with high food prices has led many to protest against the Egyptian government and resort to violent tactics. An Egyptian man said: “People are fighting. Killing for bread, some are even pulling out knives. What is happening? What is this? Famine? ” Another woman, waiting at a government bakery said: “I’ve been standing here from 7am. Its now 2pm and I can’t get hold of even one loaf of bread.” “I have five children. What am I supposed to do? You now need to bribe someone to get bread, if you do not want to get trampled on.” Egypt is one of the world’s largest importers of wheat and this year alone spent $2.6 billion on its wheat-import. However, soaring food prices has driven many Egyptians to the brink of starvation. Al Jazeera’s Jamal El Shayyal reported from Cairo, that people were demanding drastic measures to be taken and wanted the military to be called in, to solve the food crisis.
